Blogging for Medical Organizations: What to Blog About?

If you’ve done any reading on our website or elsewhere about internet marketing, by now you already know the importance of blogging. It’s perhaps the single most important aspect of getting your website to rank on any search engine. It seems like a simple enough concept, but once you figuratively “put pen to paper” it can be a little difficult to come up with a new topic every week. If you decide that you want to handle the blogging yourself instead of hiring an internet marketing team it may be helpful to have a few pointers. Here are a few tips on blogging for medical organizations from a blog writer who has experience writing blogs in the medical, dental, law, real estate and internet marketing fields.

1. Keep it Casual

You’re writing a blog, not a dissertation. Blogs should be informational, sure, but even if you’re in the medical field you should attempt to keep your “voice” lighthearted and casual. Readers of blogs are generally looking to get to know a business better, find the answer to a quick question, or read about a new or interesting piece of information. Keep your blogs relatively short and free of too much hard to understand medical or field-specific jargon.

2. Mix it Up

It’s obviously very important to blog about subjects related to your keywords, whether that’s terms like “Cosmetic Dentistry in Chandler” or “Medicare in Phoenix”. However, you can work these keywords subtly in blogs with a number of different subjects. Blogs can sometimes, but shouldn’t always read like a section on your services page. Writing about cosmetic dentistry? Find an interesting survey or study about the importance of smiles. Writing about pediatrics? Throw in a fun article about a local park or kid’s activity now and then. Mix it up but try to keep it at least somewhat related to your site’s subject matter.

3. Best Of’s and Top 5’s

Notice the format of this article? You will find it quite often throughout the web. Best of lists, tips, and top 5 articles are an easy to understand and navigate format. Many times readers will only skim the headers and key points of these articles, so make sure to come up with interesting subheaders. Lists like this are also easy for the writer as well. Pick a subject that you are already familiar with, or find lists online that you agree with and piece them together as you see fit and put your own spin on them. (Never take content word-for-word from another source, it is plagiarism and Google will penalize you for the duplicate content!)
